Printoptix relies on tailor-made cleanroom for 3D printing of micro-optics

Printoptix, an innovative spin-off from the University of Stuttgart, has focused on 3D printing of microoptics specialized. Since its founding in 2021, the company has faced the challenge of ensuring high-precision manufacturing in an environment that offers maximum cleanliness. “If the optics themselves are as large as dust particles, it is crucial that no particles occur in the printing process or in subsequent steps,” explains Nils Fahrbach, co-founder and CEO of Printoptix.
In order to meet the high requirements, Printoptix needed a cleanroom, as well as a Laminar Flow Box, which has a purity class between ISO5 and ISO7 , provide enough space for future machines and ensure a UV-free environment for the 3D printing process. Although a cleanroom solution is not necessarily provided for 3D printing, Fahrbach explains:

“If we already buy a machine, then we do it right away and put it in a clean room. This makes subsequent process steps and packaging much easier.”

Nordair Systems developed a tailor-made cleanroom solution that was perfectly tailored to Printoptix's specific needs. The cleanroom solutions impressed with features such as:

Flexible design: The cleanroom was designed so that it is easy to expand. Fahrbach explains: “We are planning to add more machines in the future. The flexible design allows us to easily adapt the cleanroom to our growing needs.”
Effective UV protection:
To protect the UV-sensitive material during 3D printing, special yellow films have been attached to the windows, which create a UV-free environment. “Our 3D printing process uses UV light, so this protection was essential,” explains Fahrbach. Energy efficiency and low noise: The filters can be operated at the lowest level, which not only optimizes energy consumption but also minimizes noise generation.
Adaptability:
Thanks to the modular design, a large machine could easily be brought into the clean room. “We simply removed a corner of the clean room and rolled the machine through the open wall,” is how Fahrbach describes the uncomplicated process.

The collaboration between Printoptix and Nordair Systems went on smoothly and efficiently. Fahrbach praises:

“You have adapted flexibly to our wishes, which we really liked. The solution was also cost-effective because we were able to dispense with unnecessary bells and whistles.”

Despite logistical challenges, such as transporting too large a part that had to be lifted over the stairwell by crane, the clean room was successfully installed. “It took about two days to set up,” Fahrbach remembers.

Printoptix satisfaction: The cleanroom in daily use

The tailor-made cleanroom impresses in everyday production processes. “Operations have been running smoothly so far,” reports Fahrbach. “The clean room is used daily, and so far there have been no failures or problems.” PrintOptix was particularly satisfied with the flexibility and the reliable service by Nordair Systems. Fahrbach emphasizes: “The fast and uncomplicated service impressed us. That was also a reason why we chose Nordair Systems.”
The successful implementation of the cleanroom at Printoptix underlines the importance of tailor-made cleanroom solutions in the high-tech industry. Fahrbach is optimistic about the future:

“Further projects with Nordair Systems will definitely follow.”
