Laminar flow boxes for the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) is one of the leading German research institutions in the Helmholtz Association. With a focus on research in the areas of energy, health and matter, HZDR develops new technologies for sustainable energy systems, modern materials and innovative research infrastructures.

For several laboratory areas in Dresden, the team was looking for a clean working environment — precisely where sample preparation and assembly work take place. A full-fledged cleanroom solution would have been oversized for these selective applications.

Initial situation: Selective cleanliness without cleanroom overhead

Nico Klingner describes the requirement in detail:

“We were looking for a clean working environment for sample preparation and assembly work for our laboratories. A full-fledged clean room was oversized for our needs. We needed a Flow Box that was functional, quickly available and affordable.”

Laminar flow boxes have been developed precisely for this application: local cleanliness at the workplace instead of a complex room solution. The investment costs remain in the area of individual laboratory devices, operation without a cleanroom lock, pressure cascade or classic cleanroom access.

Solution: Several units in different sizes

The HZDR opted for several laminar flow boxes from Nordair Systems in various sizes. Two factors were decisive: the price-performance ratio compared to alternative equipment options, and the availability of different size variants.

“Comparable offers from manufacturers were sometimes a factor of 5 in the price. In addition, we were convinced that different sizes were available, so we could choose the right solution for every laboratory.”

The variance in size was decisive here: Each laboratory has different spatial conditions and application profiles. A uniform standard measure would necessarily have led to compromises when choosing work space or location.

Outcome: Integration into Existing Laboratory Infrastructure

The flow boxes are now an integral part of two laboratories at HZDR — in one for sample preparation, in the second as a clean assembly bench.

One technical advantage is evident in everyday use: The aluminum profiles of the flow boxes are compatible with the ITEM profile system, which is already widely used as a design standard in many laboratories. Existing tools, fasteners and accessories can be reused directly without the need to set up parallel component stores.

“Overall, we are satisfied and would recommend Nordair Systems. Communication and advice were reliable and on-time. From initial contact to delivery, we were taken by the hand, without any complications.”
